We are delighted to present our Christmas 2024 Trinity Forum Reading, featuring excerpts from G.K. Chesterton’s “The Everlasting Man,” his celebrated and unconventional take on human history. With signature wit and whimsy, Chesterton delights and challenges us with his view of a Christ-centered history. His wisdom has had an enduring influence, not least as a primary intellectual milestone in the conversion of C. S. Lewis.
Our selections include Chesterton’s main arguments that focus on two things that are altogether strange and unique in our experience: The first of these is the creature called humanity, and the second is the man called Christ. He follows humanity from the first evidences of the caveman to the birth of Christ, the God in the cave at Bethlehem, and the dawn of a new world. As Trinity Forum President Cherie Harder reminds us in her Preface, this is, as Chesterton readily admits, the strangest story in the world, made stranger still by the history of the church that has followed.
