We are delighted to present this Trinity Forum Reading, featuring selections of Simone Weil’s writings with a foreword by Alonzo L. McDonald.
Simone Weil, a profound Christian mystic and passionate advocate for justice, wrote during a time marked by global war and the rise of Marxist ideology. A brilliant mind from an early age, she had mastered several languages by the time she was twelve and later studied at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris, one of France’s most elite institutions. Beyond her intellectual pursuits in writing and teaching, Weil felt deeply called to stand with those “on the outside,” devoting much of her life to serving the poor and the oppressed.
In our own time—when suffering in the world often feels as immediate as the pain within our own hearts—her words offer a path forward. This reading invites us to search for higher meaning amid affliction, and to consider how compassion, humility, and solidarity might guide us through even the darkest seasons.
