God’s Grandeur: The Poems of Gerard Manley Hopkins

“If modern Christian poetry has a saint,” writes poet Dana Gioia in his thoughtful introduction, “it is Gerard Manley Hopkins.” Hopkins is a fascinating and complex figure – virtually unknown in his lifetime but now among the most reprinted poets. A devout Catholic convert who became a Jesuit priest, he believed that poetry must serve the faith. We hope these musical, rhythmic, often ecstatic works both convey and inspire joy – in the goodness of the Creator and his creation, and in the manifestations of God’s grandeur.
