Evening Conversation with Richard Reeves

The struggles of men and boys concern us all. More studies and data suggest that boys and men are falling behind in key measures of education and workforce participation, as well as growing more isolated, disconnected, and ensnared in online porn and gambling. Others are falling sway to the call of influencers espousing a view of masculinity rooted in brutal domination. Against these forces, what can be done?

Richard Reeves is a needed voice of hope and help. He offers both practical responses and helpful insight on the nature and necessity of character formation in living wisely and well. He’ll be joined in conversation by Christine Emba, a perceptive observer and writer on gender and sexuality, youth culture, and social norms. In this conversation, we’ll explore together what it means to live lives of character, connection, and flourishing — and what faith and the formative power of faith communities can contribute to our crisis of identity and isolation.

Richard V. Reeves is the founding president of the American Institute for Boys and Men (AIBM), which he launched in 2023 to address the challenges facing boys and men through evidence-based research. Formerly, Richard was a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, and his work has appeared in major media outlets including The Atlantic, The Wall Street Journal, and the New York Times. His current research priorities include the impact and importance of fatherhood and gender gaps in education. Richard is also the author of several books, including Of Boys and Men: Why the Modern Male Is Struggling, Why It Matters, and What to Do About It, and Dream Hoarders.

Christine Emba is a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI). She is a contributing writer at the New York Times and a senior fellow at the Georgetown University Initiative on Catholic Social Thought and Public Life. She was formerly a staff writer at The Atlantic and a columnist and editor at The Washington Post. She is the author of Rethinking Sex: A Provocation, and is a contributing editor at Comment magazine and an editor-at-large at Wisdom of Crowds.
