Why God Became Man

This holiday season, we are delighted to present a special Trinity Forum Reading featuring the classic Why God Became Man by Anselm of Canterbury, with an introduction by theologian Mark Labberton.

The trappings of Christmas often distract from what has been called the scandal of the incarnation: how is it that, in the words of Frederick Buechner, "the Creator of the ends of the earth comes among us in diapers"? Why would God choose to dwell among us, as one of us? It is an enduring wonder, a mystery explored with especial acuity by the medieval philosopher Anselm of Canterbury in his classic Why God Became Man.

Insightfully introduced by theologian and former Fuller Seminary President Mark Labberton, Anselm’s work explores both the rationality of faith and the implications of God’s nature and love — and redirects the readers gaze towards the character and being of the newborn King. As Labberton noted, "If we are instructed by Anselm, then when we sing “Away in the Manger” we will be far more likely to focus on God’s being and how God’s love reorders our own being and loving."
