Summer Reading: Revelations of Divine Love by Julian of Norwich
Our Summer Trinity Forum Reading will feature selections from Revelations of Divine Love by Julian of Norwich, an anchoress and mystic, with an introduction by Trinity Forum Senior Fellow Jessica Hooten Wilson.
Julian is best remembered for her affirmation that “All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.” Yet during her lifetime, Julian’s world, much like our own, was characterized by turmoil and unrest. The Black Death killed an estimated half of Europe’s population and left no city untouched – including her beloved Norwich. At the age of thirty, Julian received sixteen shewings, or visions, of the passion of Christ. These visions, compiled under the title Revelations of Divine Love, comprise the earliest surviving text written by a woman in the English language. Julian’s words continue to be a source of comfort during turbulent times.
Fall Reading: Walking by Henry David Thoreau
Our Fall Trinity Forum Reading will feature naturalist Henry David Thoreau’s ruminations on the art of walking, with an introduction by Trinity Forum President Cherie Harder.
In this insightful essay, Thoreau provides a prescription for our hurried age. Walking reminds us “to regard man as an inhabitant, or a part and parcel of Nature.” These observations, along with his magnum opus Walden, established Thoreau as a major figure in the Transcendentalist movement of his time, which had points of agreement – and tension – with Christian orthodoxy. Reading his discursive prose is itself a bit like taking a walk in a lovely place. Introduced by Cherie Harder with reflections from her recent sabbatical journeying the “Camino de Santiago,” Walking speaks to all of us in this high-speed age.
